January 11th, 2008 So Tired

After so many hours it’s not funny, I’ve finally made my first WordPress theme. If you were here earlier and saw a mess, yeah. Sorry about that.

The truth of the matter is I’m too tired to talk about the new theme or celebrate. It’s not done, either.

I still hate theming WordPress. I still hate it so very much.

So, this will be the layout until another year goes by. Happy 2008.

Edit: After about an hour’s worth of a break I came back to this layout and noticed the contrast blows like crazy. I don’t like it.

Upping the contrast will make the purple look pink though. Oh well. Who the Hell cares.

I’ll fix up the CSS and up the contrast on the images tomorrow.

Edit2: Actually it looks fine. Just woke up but I’ll be going back to sleep.

Either way, I’ll be making a little twist with this layout once it’s done. So whoo.

January 2nd, 2008 Holy New Year, Batman!

I’m not sure what happened. Since December I’ve lost all blogging interest. Rather, all interest in anything web-related. I still have a lot of things to blog about but I just can’t bring myself to sit down and rant on and on via keyboard about them…

So, 2008 is here, everyone! I don’t know about you, but 2008 so far has been pretty cold down here in Florida (I know what you’re thinking, “How cold can it get in a tropical setting?!”). Well, it is pretty damn cold. The temperature dropped down to like 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

How cold is it where you’re all living, I wonder?

And to bring up my previous topic before someone completely spoiled my Christmas Day, what did you all receive as gifts on Christmas? What weren’t you expecting?

A great friend of mine got engaged on Christmas. That was pretty unexpected, if I can say so! But I wish the two of them everything and anything wonderful, of course!

I wasn’t expecting getting so many leggings to wear! I received leggings in black, brown, dark teal and a wine color. I just need white! That’s all I need! I did not receive my red and silver flats though, haha. Don’t worry. I shall snatch a pair up sometime this year.

Oh! All of you WordPress users should update to the newest version soon, 2.3.2. It’s a security fix but hey, safe than sorry. Upgrading tip: Upload only the folders Wp-Admin and Wp-Includes, and anything outside of those in the “root” of the zip / tar file. Uploading the Wp-Content is just going to erase over anything customized (hope that helps, Mitch!).

Skipping random topics, I had a wonderful time for New Years Eve. I spent it with my cousins, partially drinking, partially rambling. Peppermint Vodka smoothies are okay in moderation. But then again, I don’t drink quickly. I’m the loser that takes a sip of their drink every three-to-five minutes.

Enjoy the new year, enjoy time with your families, Hell. Enjoy life.

Edit: I’ve been looking for a WordPress plugin so I can list the commenters’ names at the bottom of my posts. I can’t seem to find one. Anyone have any luck? I’m generally pretty good at finding “hidden” stuff online.

December 9th, 2007 Bad Behavior should be Punished

I thought I should make a pun out of one of the more popular WordPress plugins, Bad Behavior, in the title. So I did.

But honestly, it should be punished. I tried to blog earlier through Windows Live Writer (I love that app so much) and I kept getting an error. WLW told me to log in but no matter how many tries, it didn’t work.

So I thought “Well, maybe the program is screwy.” When I was logging into my WordPress through Firefox, Bad Behavior spits out a message telling me my IP has been blocked and I should contact the administrator (then it lists my email publicly, thanks) for help.

Well, um. That’s kind of weird to contact myself. I’m the administrator and I was blocked from my own blog. Really. What the Hell.

I don’t have viruses (virii?) and I clean out any adware / spyware (even if it’s just tracking cookies) often on my computer. I take great care of my baby.

I ended up going to the Bad Behavior website and logging in via FTP to reupload the plugin.

That was very inconvenient, dammit.

Oh yeah. Look at my alien! =3

November 13th, 2007 Where’s a Stick When you Need One?

A poking stick, you dirty birds.

I really just don’t feel like blogging. At all.

It’s not like I don’t have things to write about, I do. I have all these thoughts and events I’d really like to elaborate on, but I just don’t have the emotional strength lately. Does that even make sense? Lack of emotional strength?

I’d also like to work on a WordPress design for this domain and start building the website back up since people actually noticed there is pretty much no content whatsoever (thanks for noticing, Ely!). But again, that lack of emotional strength.

Not that I’m in mourning or anything extreme like that, but I have this feeling of Impending Doom hovering over me lately.

Next post will either be about Simba (my kitty) or Halloween, that was quite a while ago.

October 31st, 2007 WordPress Security Candy

To make a short post (maybe) for today, I thought I should talk about WordPress security.

Now, I’m no guru or anything. I don’t know PHP or MySQL, and I haven’t been using WordPress for too long a time. Actually, only since the beginning of this month have I been using WordPress, and not to it’s full potential (home-brewed theme, anyone?).

So why am I talking about security if I don’t know crap?

Well, the little that I do know makes me a bit worried.

Did you know that you could access your Includes folder from any browser? It’s public.

Not to bash WordPress or it’s developers and community, because I’m practically in love with the script and everyone in involved, but you would think the script could handle permissions like this automatically through the install. It’s such a popular and amazing script, I’m sure they could’ve handled this.

“Well, it’s not a big deal if people can access my Includes folder.”

No. It IS a BIG deal. Just imagine if your blog was popular enough, some scumbag hacker could wander in and screw you over. I’m not sure how exactly, but I’m definitely sure this isn’t safe practice.

Talk about a bad Trick, huh? (relating poorly to Halloween, blah)

So, if you’re on an Apache server and have access to .htaccess files, you can fix this problem right up. Here is where I was alerted to this little issue and where you can find the fix (this same article is linked through your WordPress Dashboard as well, for the lazy out there).

Again, this is by no means me attacking WordPress or the people involved. This is just me expressing my “!” or surprise at something like this. It’s very surprising for me, honestly.
