It’s almost five in the morning and I’m half way done backing up my important data onto DVD-Rs and onto my wonderful Hello Kitty USB (note to self, buy a much bigger USB soon).
Too tired to moan about Vista. I’ll do that after I get settled back in.
Will keep this post updated for future Vista “AAAUUGGGH” that may develop. Goodbye and goodnight.
Edit #1: After a long while of thinking things over, I decided I really really dislike Vista and I wanted Windows XP back. So guess what? Downloading Windows XP now.
I know, I know. I suck for being a pirate. But do any of you have cash bursting from your purses or wallets? I know I don’t. If I can afford things, I’ll get them. If not, oh well. I’ll try to get it anyway.
I also don’t know if this will even work. Because you know, drivers and all. Would Vista drivers work on XP? I’m backing up my drivers now onto my already mentioned Hello Kitty USB
It will take some time getting used to XP again. After all, Vista does look a lot nicer. And there are minor features here and there that I liked better than XP. But overall? I can’t take it anymore. The file-eating, folder-erasing, ram-sucking bitch must die.

Oh, Vista. How I’ve had it up to here (hand over head) with you. I’m so bloody tired and worn out trying to get this relationship to work. But it’s obviously one-sided. And you know what? I’m sick of being the one trying to make it work between us.
You’re like a big baby. I have to be taking care of you all the time. When we got together for the first time in April ‘07 I was actually giddy. You know me, I’m somewhat of a tech dork / girl. I thought “Oh my God, I have Vista on my notebook!” You were the cute new guy down the street most of us didn’t hate yet and were willing to flirt with you.
You were hot, with your awesome Aero look. And you were fresh, for some reason your parents (Microsoft) decided to rename a bunch of your folders and things and I thought “Well, sure. What OS doesn’t do a few name changes?” But you also had an attitude problem. Maybe I’m attracted to rebels? Not. You pissed me off from the beginning, not getting along with other programs. But I was blind and said “Hey, it’s my baby, okay? So he’s a little mean.”
You worked well with other programs thankfully after months. So I was relieved. But I also noticed I had to regularly clean out my closet because you kept storing so much crap (aka the damn shadow cache thing you have, you ate all my memory very quickly). So I had to keep reinstalling you until I figured out the problem. Thus banning you from storing your crap in my closets ever again (turning shadow cache off / system restore).
Things started to go really hazy between the two of us when you couldn’t even sleep well. You were paranoid and often “Blue Screen of Death”ed me after putting you to sleep or closing your case. You’re housed in a notebook. A notebook! How can you not go to sleep correctly?! That’s when the babying all began.
I gave you a wonderful firewall, wonderful antivirus, regularly scan you for adware and yet you decide to spit in my face and be all “I don’t need that” and get viruses anyway. I know you have a virus at the moment and I don’t give enough of a crap about you anymore to fix it. I really don’t. You’ve been one big problem after the other and I’m so tired of you.
I tried to cheat on you with Ubuntu (a distribution of Linux) but Ubuntu wouldn’t have it. Ubuntu wouldn’t work well with the sound card, maybe he felt bad for you. But there you have it, I’ve had a little fling with Ubuntu. I still much rather prefer Ubuntu’s company over yours any day of the week.
I know you’re insanely jealous too. With good reason, because everyone out there is better than you. Your older brother XP is better than you. Just about any distribution of Linux is better than you. BSD kicks your ass. OS X used to steal your lunch money and now he’s back to kick you in the groin.
But don’t fear, dear Vista. Don’t fear. When I get an iMac and hook up with OS X Leopard, I’m dumping your ass.
Love,
The crazy girl who’s pretending to write to an OS,
Munin

I read this article at Wired and it’s made me think very differently about Apple and especially about Steve Jobs.
I love Apple’s OS and their computers. But Steve’s attitude towards his workers leaves me feeling hollow. Sure, it makes everyone work harder for something amazing, but at the same time hurts the workers’ feelings and has them feeling like they’ll be fired for sneezing.
Steve’s always been a funny guy in my eyes (funny as in weird) and I’ve always felt that the only thing going for him is his charisma. But this just makes me really dislike him as a person. I like his approach to speeches and presentations but blah.
Reading this article makes me think that Apple is the Evil and Microsoft is the Good.
Microsoft treats it’s workers well, likes publicity when people blog about them, Hell. They’ve taken an openness sort of approach to their products as well. They’re the exact opposite.
Yet I find myself wanting the “Evil’s” computer and OS more and more. How the Hell?

I’m a huge fan of freeware for my computer, even bigger fan of open source programs for said computer and websites.
What’s the difference between open source and freeware? Lots.
A program or script that’s considered freeware would typically be done by a person, group of people or a company who is closed off to the general public. And by closed off, I’m talking about code-wise. They don’t let anyone touch the code or see the code, definitely not edit the code.
An open source program / script is just that. Open source. The code is freely available. Free for anyone to grab and edit, redistribute, no restrictions on what they can do. Most open source software or scripts I’ve seen are under the GPL, General Public License which is to allow anyone to do the above mentioned.
When it comes to programs for my computer, I don’t mind if it’s freeware or open source. Either or would be wonderful for me, as long as I like the program and if I don’t have to pay for it. Because I’m flat broke most if not all the time.
My websites, though. I really prefer open source. Why?
I like the idea of people sharing code and communities working on a project to call their baby. It’s just an awesome feeling. Plus I’m somewhat paranoid. I like having open source scripts on my websites because I can do whatever I like with it design-wise, don’t have to worry about the license.
I’m a PHP / MySQL noob of the infinite degree so all I really can do is edit templates and themes for things. So the idea that I don’t have to keep a “Managed by (insert script)” text or an ugly button anywhere makes me full of gleeeeeeee.
On my computer I don’t have much open source software as I used to mainly because I’ve reinstalled Vista almost a month ago.
As for website scripts I’ve used WordPress (you’re looking at it) and NucleusCMS. For web forums, I’ve used phpBB (I won’t link to it simply because I have beef with the script) and MyBB (very awesome, ftw).
What are your thoughts on freeware and open source? Does it make any difference to you, as long as it’s free? And finally, do you guys have any open source stuff on your computers?
Feel free to share what freeware and open source things you use for your computer or websites, I’d love to see what you use!

So I’ve been busy all day and recently just got a chance to sit down. I was pretty excited, because the first thing I was going to do today was watch the Macworld keynote from Apple.
But it never happened for me.
Because Apple apparently thinks they’re funny, and removed the page and link to the video for the keynote from their website while I was downloading Quicktime, just a minute or two away from viewing it. Imagine my surprise when I click that pretty little “Watch now” button and it shows me to a Quicktime error page.
What the Hell, Apple? What. The. Hell?
Edit: So… The keynote is back up. Haha. I have such amazing powers.
