I have to say, I’m pretty bummed out about WordPress’ security. I know that the good ol’ folks at WordPress.org try, and it’s indeed a fabulous piece of software.
Hell, for years I went on saying how much I hated it and now I honestly can’t find any other blogging platform that lives to my expectations as WordPress has.
But the security… Oi.
I still stick to my previous points on it’s security (WordPress Security Candy) even though I’m no guru at all. But I just want to take a moment here to rant about the security before I go to bed.
Recently someone hosted at Alamoria.net (not saying who, now) had their WordPress install hacked and it really bummed me out.
Was it just them? Was the whole domain and everyone in it going to be compromised? What was this hacker trying to achieve? Would I be able to help the poor roommie (roommate. what I use to describe people hosted at the main house, being alamoria.net. aren’t I original?) fix the mess and not lose their data?
These were all troubling questions. That I wish I had the answer to right now.
Someone apparently signed up under the unregisterable (I know that’s not a word) WordPress install and somehow was able to delete a whole load of important WordPress files. I wish I could’ve found the IP.
(Anyone have suggestions as to obtaining the person’s IP?)
I wish you were more secure, WordPress. Now I can’t sleep.
I’ll post again on this topic when the mess has been cleaned up.
Has anyone had trouble with WordPress? Not hacking per se, but anything screwing up for some strange uknown reason? Any gripes about WordPress?
What do you absolutely hate about WordPress but you can’t see yourself switching to any other blogging script?

As much as I love Wordpress, there is a thing or two about it that bother me.
Like the custom tag input on the Write page. No matter what, half the time it gives me ridiculous errors and the other half works perfectly well. Most confusing part of the entire script.
I’ve never had a problem with security, but I imagine that’s because I never really had that much popularity. Now I wonder how I’m going to make sure Miiitch.com is more secure if I ever get to the kind of popularity I want.

Well, I do have one problem with Wordpress, and that’s the auto p and br tags they put in that you can’t see in code viewing mode. It sometimes renders my site’s code invalid. Also it makes it so the code tag doesn’t work, but I have a plugin for that. I also have a plugin for character encoding because apparently, without it, foreign characters would look like question marks.
That sucks that someone on your server got hacked. There are precautions you can take to decrease the chances of being hacked though. For instance, never use the login “Admin”. Also, use .htaccess to make it so people can’t open config.php. Put a blank index.php page in wp-content and wp-plugins, and possibly also themes. That way people can’t view the structure of your site, find out what plugins you’re using, etc.
