February 26th, 2008 PHP5 and a New Domain

So everything’s now nice and repaired pretty much. I’m on the new server and despite having a few problems moving things in I’m already much happier with the service!

The support team is excellent. EXCELLENT. They take a bit of time to get back to you (an hour or so) but of the several people I’ve talked to at support (including admins!) they’ve all been nice and helpful, unlike the old host where they’d answer me rudely or respond as if I’m two years old. “See, this is called a Cooooookiiiieee…”.

The community forum they have is great too. Very helpful people on there as well.

I’m pretty happy right now. As for the long time it took to activate my account, the promotion really set them back. But now I’m just glad to be here. /sighs with relief I don’t have to worry about my data disappearing or anything.

Oh. I’ll be letting this domain expire soon. It’ll be redirected to PeachFrost.org until it expires. Yay for domain variations. I wanted something new but have it share something from the old domain, too.

Oh. One more thing…

All scripts under alamoria.net and frosted-peach.org are running under PHP5 and MySQL 5. =D Yay for sexiness.

Edit: I’m not changing domains. The domain sounds pretty, but when I write it out my eyes find it ugly. It has something to do with the P, H and F order. My eyes just find it ugly. =/

So I’ll keep frosted-peach.org <3 Wasn’t thrilled about moving stuff anyway, haha.

February 24th, 2008 Why The Move?

A good friend asked me "Why are you moving servers, anyway?" earlier and I thought "Okay. Fair enough".

So let me sit down with you kiddies and explain.

I’m currently hosted with Cirtex Hosting. Although they’ve been generally a very good service and nice towards me, every hosting company has hiccups at one point or another. My personal experience with Cirtex (I’m on the Economy plan, $10/mo) has been pretty awesome.

There was one time where I dunno what happened exactly but everyone’s data was turned back to like a week earlier. Okay, I guess it happens?

But recently on the Lucky server where my friend Mitch (of the now-defunct enveere.org) something happened where the company rolled everyone back to October of 2007, without warning. I felt terrible for him and all the other people on the Lucky server.

Why didn’t they have a weekly backup or at least a monthly back up to restore from? Why didn’t they warn anyone on Lucky that they were going to do this? I’m sure there are many, many angry people (including poor Mitch) who are absolutely dying to leave because of this incident.

One reason for my move is because (although I do weekly backups, every Sunday on my computer) I don’t want to take the chance that something catastrophic like that happens with Edgy (server I’m on) and without warning.

You just don’t do that to people.

While looking for a future host for myself and poor Mitch I thought of my previous (and first) host, Surpass Hosting. I remember them having great service. The only reason I moved to Cirtex was because at the time I needed something with a lot more space and bandwidth.

A few years later, tadaa~ Surpass has way more space and bandwidth, for the same prices I originally paid to be with them. Their community Surmunity, is full of really helpful and fast-replying people who know what they’re doing, not to mention they’re funny.

And even better, there was a promotion going on, it’s called the One Love II promotion. You pay $1 USD for a whole year of their smallest shared hosting plan (which is still better than the current Cirtex plan I have now).

It’s not all about costs, but what a nice way to return to Surpass Hosting! When the year is up, I’ll move up to their Deluxe plan, which is $10 USD a month. Which is also what I pay Cirtex now.

So all in all I end up winning. Yay for hostees who will have more space, I’ll have more to offer them and I’ll be worry-free of disasters.

The promotion seems to be over now. Hopefully they’ll finally activate my account and I can get started with them.

February 23rd, 2008 Delayed Move

Sorry for all the waiting but the move has been delayed for who knows how long. The company I’m moving to has too many people registering at the time so I need to wait a bit.

Perhaps by Monday I’ll finally be able to move everything over.

Rest assured everything will remain active on this old server until every possible problem’s fixed on the new one, to less inconvenience you guys.

Email me at mchan[AT]live.com for any questions.

February 21st, 2008 Moving

I’m moving servers (to a different company actually) later on in the week.

I figured with the kidney stones and my 20th birthday and all, I should do something really nice for myself. ;D

I’m sorry for the downtime that will be occurring. I’ll be sending notices to hostees later today so they don’t freak out.

February 20th, 2008 Pivot And PivotX

I’ve been playing around with Pivot and PivotX today. I have to say, I really enjoy these two scripts quite a bit (they’re blog / CMS scripts).

PivotX being the newest version is in it’s third public alpha phase. Unfortunately that went a little crazy on my server (it’s an alpha, hello?) so I decided to try the original, Pivot.

I remember installing Pivot a long time ago back when my site was hosted at Icia’s domain, Saevus.net and I was so confused. I think it was the lack of experience and general knowledge in scripts that really did me in and made me switch to Cutenews (ew).

Trying Pivot now I was pleasantly surprised. It has a ton of features, most which I’ve grown to expect from a MySQL blog. What? Oh yes. Pivot is a PHP-only flat-file blog. It’s pretty damn amazing for a flat-file blog if you ask me. Very, very impressed with it.

When the first "gold" release of PivotX is released I’ll try that out. So far both versions are easy to customize (unlike a certain script I’m using now) and PivotX has a Pages feature plus a nice admin panel (Pages!).

Who knows I might switch to Pivot if I end up liking it that much.
